APPLICATIONS: Active Ingredient for Conditioners, Antistatic Agent, Detergent Sanitisers, softner. Behenyl Trimethyl Ammonium Chloride is used in organic synthesis as a phase transfer catalyst to enhance the reaction rate of a two-phase organic-water system and as an intermediate. Quaternary ammonium salts are used for formulating antimicrobials, disinfection agents and sanitizers. It acts as a slimicidal agents and algaecide for industrial water treatment. Other uses include a feed supplement for cattle, in hair shampoo, in textile printing, in the glue that bonds plywood, as an ingredient in nutritive media for yeast, in cleaning products, and as cough medicine.

Behentrimonium chloride, also known as docosyltrimethylammonium chloride or BTAC-228, is a yellow waxlike organic compound with chemical formula CH3(CH2)21N(Cl)(CH3)3, used as an antistatic agent and, sometimes, a disinfectant. It is commonly found in cosmetics such as conditioners, hair dye, and mousse, and also in detergents. Laboratory tests have indicated that it does not readily biodegrade.[1]

Small quantity of phase-transfer catalyst, involves a substrate (soluble in the organic layer) and an anionic reagent or a nucleophile (dissolved in the aqueous layer), extracts one of the reactants, most commonly an anion, across the interface into the other phase where reaction can take place with the substrate and reaction can proceed.
The quaternary ammonium salts can carry the nucleophile from the aqueous to organic phase and are used as the most commonly used as phase-transfer catalyst. The phosphonium derivatives favoring higher thermal stability property are also used. Crown ethers and polyethylenglycol compounds are also widely used in this application.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DISINFECTANT
Disinfectant is an agent applied to inanimate objects to destroy, neutralize, or inhibit the growth of disease-carrying microorganisms, (whereas antiseptics are applied primarily to living things). Heat and radiation are also disinfectants. Common ingredients of chemical disinfectant are:
Mercuric Chlorides, ,Formaldehyde, 8-Hydroxyquinoline, Copper Hydroxide, Cresol, Alcohols (Ethyl Alcohol Isopropyl Alcohol), Iodines / Iodophors, Chlorine releasing compounds, Gluteraldehyde, Phenolics, Quaternary Ammonium Compounds
The effects of polyols on the rheological properties of ternary systems consisting of behenyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (C22TAC), 1-octadecanol (C18OH) and water are studied to improve the stability against shear forces. The basic ternary systems behave as solids due to the formation of lamella liquid crystals called ? gel. The external shear to ternary systems cause the rupture of gel structures and the systems are converted from solid-like bodies to viscoelastic liquids. It is confirmed through differential scanning calorimetry and small angle X-ray scattering that the mechanism resulting in the rheological changes is the release of bound water in lamella liquid crystals without rupture of lipophilic layers. When the trivalent alcohol like glycerin is added, the quaternary systems show the plastic responses even after violent shear. The phase transition behavior implies that the glycerin molecules are hardly incorporated into the lamella layers of lipophilic groups, but remain in the water layers to in rease in their strength. The C22TAC/C18OH/glycerin/water quaternary systems can form the strong gel with high stability against external shear. A gel network made of behenyl tri- methyl ammonium methylsulfate (BTAMS) and its chloride version (BTAC) were compared for their colloidal struc- ture, rheological properties and wet friction. The hair conditioners made of these gel networks were evaluated by a consumer panel for wet conditioning performance. The BTAMS gel network had a higher G', G'' and ??950 than the BTAC gel network. The rheology of the BTAMS gel network was more responsive to the concentration of the surfactant and fatty alcohols due to the bulk water phase outside the BTAMS lamellar gel phase. While the BTAC gel network swells accordingly depending on the concentration, no sign of a bulk water phase was found. Despite the presence of a bulk water phase, the BTAMS lamellar gel was much stiffer than the BTAC lamellar gel, thus con- tributing to the higher G', G'' making it difficult to break under conditions of stress (rinsing), which leads to a lower wet friction during rins- ing that is noticeable to the consumer. The lower wet friction was not due to greater deposition of conditioning in- gredients. It is used as it is or in compound fertilizer. Although it is better known as rice fertilizer, it has been tested and used on other crops like wheat, barley, sugarcane, maize, fiber crops etc. Of particular note is its use on palms; increasing the yield of Copra per tree. The substance is a quarternary ammonium chloride derived from fatty alcohol. The general chemical structure is R-N+ (Me)3 Cl-, whereas the alkylrest R is variable for the main components C20 and C22 but also shorter and longer C-Chains (in smaller amounts). The substance C20-C22-Alkyl- trimethyl-ammoniumchlorid is used as an ingredient for cosmetic applications. Quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) are widely used in commercial and consumer applications as disinfectants, fabric softeners, hair conditioners, and emulsifying agents.
Most quaternary salts are water-soluble or water-dispersible, but depending on structure, some are oil-soluble. Many are cationic in character and are not compatible with soap, anionic wetting agents, or synthetic detergents. Quaternary ammonium compounds have many different uses. In the general field of pesticides, such uses ata as diinfectants, cleansers, sterilizers, deodorants,· emulsfon stabilizers, fungicides, and algicides .Soy alkyltrimethyl ammonium chloride is used as a surfactant to recover crude oil in crude oil and water emulsions Lauryl Trimethyl Ammonium Chloride is part of a natural herbal fabric-conditioning concentrate that effectively softens, conditions and sanitises all types of fabric during laundry processing. Alkyl (C16, C18, C22) trimethylammonium chloride, (COLIPA1 P72) bears the symbol (+) and can therefore be used in cosmetics at higher concentrations, as long as they are not employed as preservatives. The solution of Cetyl Trimethyl Ammonium Chloride is an almost water white to sightly yellowish liquid and has wide ranging applications as a biocide including disinfectant formulations for cleaners and as a inhibitor for microbe induced corrosion. It is especially stable in highly acidic conditions making it a superior choice to benzalkonium chloride for toilet bowl cleaner applications. It is also effective as a hair conditioning agent, phase transfer catalyst, cationic surfactant, antistatic and antiseptic agent.
